How To Choose The Right Style For Your Home

Choosing a style for your home can be quite difficult. In fact, it is something that a lot of people struggle to do.

The great thing is that you don’t have to stick with one specific look forever.

Determining your style is a way to establish some parameters. You can discover the things you like, find out what characteristics they have in common and then attribute them to a look you can enjoy.

Staying within the parameters of a certain style will allow you to create a beautiful and cohesive look for your home.

But, how do you choose the right one for your home?

Let’s explore how you can do that in more detail…

Why Choose A Style?

First of all, you may be wondering why you need to choose a style to begin with.

The basic reason is so that every piece in a room works well together. A disjointed look can be jarring and won’t give you a harmonious feel in your home. So, your furniture should work with your wall colours, your artwork should tie in with your soft furnishings, and your window coverings should match your colour palette.

By being able to give your preferred “look” a name, it makes it easier to identify. By defining it, you create a mental picture that makes it easier to interpret and produce. It also means that if you are talking to an interior designer or a supplier, you can easily describe the look you are after. If you say that your style is contemporary, industrial or modern, then people will know exactly what you mean and be able to help you.

So, how do you choose this look?

How To Choose

It can be easy to fall in love with a lot of different design trends. But if you are struggling to pull everything together in your home, and you can’t seem to get the flow right, then it is probably time to narrow it down to one design style.

Here are some ways that you can do that…

Research:The first step is to hunt out pictures of the styles you like and collect them together. A fantastic way to do that is by building a board on Pinterest where you can save any room set ups that catch your eye. You can also go through design magazines, and keep a file of your favourites. Also, hunt out paint colour cards and fabric swatches. Once you bring some of these elements together, you will start to see a pattern forming on the kind of styles you are drawn to.

Inspirations: Have you been in someone’s home and absolutely fallen in love with the look and feel? Maybe you have visited a gorgeous show home or seen a stunning mock room set up in a store. Take note of the kind of style that was used to create these inspirational pieces. You can then replicate the look in your own home with a few tweaks here and there of course.

Liveability: You need to think about the practicality of the styles you love. Ask yourself if you will be able to live in them full time. Will you have the energy to store 20 pillows at night so that you can hop into bed or are you more of a minimal pillow person? Are lots of white and glass surfaces a good idea if you have a house full of kids and pets? Find a happy medium between the styles you love and the practicality of maintaining them.

Name It:Once you have done your research, seen your inspirations and given them the practicality test, it is time to put a name on your style. Like we said above, putting a name to your look allows you to create a visual picture of your end result and it also allows other people to help you achieve it. Look at the buzz words that have come up in all of your research - maybe things like industrial, modern, eclectic, classic, or boho. You can use these words for sourcing the furnishings to create the styled look in your home.

Defining your own personal style is an important step in creating a beautiful home. And now you know how to do it!
